Location: Company Lake and Sundial Beach
Let’s work on our shorebird ids! This is a beautiful spot on the west side of the confluence of the Sandy and Columbia Rivers. Although it’s a strange industrialized zone as well it’s a great place to spot shorebirds this time of year.
We’ll walk about a quarter mile on paved path then down a rather steep hill to a flat but bumpy dirt path that leads to the beach. We’ll walk between 1-2 miles at a slow pace, allow 2 hours. Bo promises not to off-road it this time!
For a bit, we’ll walk along the Marine Drive Trail located at the end of NE Sundial Drive just north of Troutdale Airport next to Company Lake. It’s labeled “Sandy’s spot” on the map because Sandy showed it to us.
This is a little bit of a drive from Portland, carpool if you can and maybe plan a swim after!
For drivers-if you take the last right towards the BPA Troutdale substation (also called NE Sundial Rd) there is a large vacant area to park under big utility structures.

Force Lake History and Birding Tour
Presence & Preservation in partnership with Vanport Mosaic
Join us as we weave the present and the past at Force Lake with local archivist and Birdhers co-facilitator, Marti Clemmons, for the 9th Vanport Mosaic Festival. We’ll connect in learning about the intricate history of a local birding site Force Lake, once part of Oregon’s second largest city, Vanport. We’ll observe and enjoy the birds that have been present here, then and now. Imagine the birds as threads that have flown through this place, connecting us with our history that enriches our understanding of the present.
